What do you do at the Laboratory?
I am the group administrative assistant for the Bioanalytics Systems & Technologies Group. My job is to provide daily support for the group, which entails travel, shopping carts, calendar management, release reviews, and more. One of the most important aspects of my job is helping to build our group culture and working together as a team.
I started at the Laboratory in the Homeland Protection Division and later joined the Biotechnology and Human Systems Division. Working in both gave me an amazing opportunity to get to know more people and strengthen my multitasking skills. Over time I have also been able to take classes such as CPR, first aid, and mental health training to help personal growth and to support the group.
Why do you think the Laboratory is a good fit for you?
I was in the restaurant industry for 16 years before starting at the Laboratory. Working in restaurants taught me a lot, but I wanted to do more and have an impact. While interviewing, I had two goals: to be a part of a team and to be able to accomplish something every single day. It makes me so happy that those goals have become a reality.
What is something you're proud of from your time working here?
When I started my current position. I am so grateful for the moments that lead up to this position and the time I had to learn and grow. It took a long time to build my confidence in the administrative field, and to be a group admin was always an important goal as they are the glue and backbone of a team. I want to be someone that people can come to for anything and who can bring people together and keep a group strong and united. To actually now be in the position, I feel very accomplished.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to work in your field?
In this field, people skills are one of the most important assets. My best advice for anyone is to hone your communication skills. Multitasking and organization are strong qualities, but understanding people and having the personality to help build a group culture that is supportive, communicative, and positive is pivotal for development.
