Paul W. Juodawlkis
Dr. Paul W. Juodawlkis is a principal staff member in the Advanced Technology Division, where he is guiding program-portfolio strategy, developing cross-cutting advanced technologies and capabilities, and enhancing partner relationships both inside and outside of Lincoln Laboratory. Prior to this role, he served as the leader of the Quantum Information and Integrated Nanosystems Group, where he provided technical and administrative leadership to a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and support staff engaged in the research and development of quantum processors (both superconducting and trapped-ion qubits), quantum and classical sensors, superconducting digital electronics, and integrated photonic technologies (silicon-based, compound semiconductor, and hybrid). Beyond this work, he has a broad range of technical interests, including optoelectronic components, compound-semiconductor materials, nonlinear optical devices, and ultrafast phenomena.
During his career, Juodawlkis led the team that developed the semiconductor slab-coupled optical waveguide amplifier (SCOWA) and used it to realize watt-class power amplifiers, mode-locked lasers, and low-noise single-frequency lasers having record performance. The team has applied these components to improve the performance of optoelectronic oscillators, microwave photonic subsystems, and absorption spectroscopy for remote gas sensing. Recently, this team has been working to develop hybrid photonic multi-chip modules (P-MCMs) that combine SCOW components, thin-film lithium-niobate (TFLN) optical modulators, high-current waveguide photodiodes, and optical passives on a silicon-nitride PIC platform. In earlier work, Juodawlkis made key contributions to the development of optical sampling techniques for microwave frequency translation and photonic analog-to-digital conversion. He also served as a radar systems engineer on a multisensor airborne test bed program in the Tactical Defense Systems Group at the Laboratory.
Juodawlkis is a Fellow of both the IEEE and the Optical Society (OSA). He has authored or coauthored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications. He has participated on a number of technical program committees, including serving as program co-chair (2010) and general co-chair (2012) of the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO). He was an elected member of the IEEE Photonics Society Board of Governors (2011–2013), and served as vice president of membership (2014–2016) and secretary-treasurer (2017–2019) for the society.
Juodawlkis holds a BS degree from Michigan Technological University, an MS degree from Purdue University, and a PhD degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, all in electrical engineering.
